Joe Swift (full name Joseph Samuel Swift) is a Garden Designer, writer, landscaper, director, and television presenter, known for Gardeners World and RHS Chelsea Flower Show. He also serves as the President of the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) and patron to many gardening charities.
Joe is a co-founder and design director of Modular Garden, a garden design and build company. Modular was founded in 2004 with the aim of streamlining the process of designing and installing a great garden within a budget.
Joe started presenting BBC Gardeners World in 1998 and co-presenting the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show alongside Monty Don in 2001. He has also appeared on several television shows as a designer and presenter including Gardeners’ World Live, Hampton Court, RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, BBC’s Small Town Gardens, Take 3 Gardeners, and design judge on BBC’s Gardener of the Year. He has also appeared on Celebrity Masterchef and other programs as a guest.
According to his official website, Joe started gardening and landscaping professionally when he left school and went on to study garden design at The English Gardening School in 1990. He started working as a landscaper in North London and later decided to travel and work overseas including in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia.
Joe has been on Television for more than two decades and he has designed many gardens for television, including one for Comic Relief, several for Gardeners World & all of Alan Titchmarsh’s ‘How to be a Gardener 2’ series.
Joe writes a weekly column for The Times. He’s also written 8 books including;’ The Plant Room’, ‘Joe’s Urban Garden Handbook’, and ‘Joe’s Allotment’ published in April 2009.
He attended The English Gardening School where he studied garden design. In his spare time, Joe enjoys playing bass guitar, football, and golf. The North London resident is an avid Arsenal fan.
